Worth Reading

In 1913, women were expected to wear smotheringly hot full length dresses in order to be considered decent. Most women did not work outside of the home, being expected to be happy in their role as wife and mother. In most of the world, women didn't even have the right to vote. Surely any marital advice given at this time would seem incredibly outdated or, at the very least, charmingly quaint, in the year 2011? It was with this attitude that I first opened the pages of Don'ts for Wives by Blanche Ebbutt. It did not take me long to realise just how wrong I was. While some of the tips are no longer relevant to the average reader - those having to do with how to deal with servants, for example - much of the wisdom within this volume is as relevant today as it was then. I found myself taking note of many pieces of advice, with the intention of attempting to remedy my behaviour within my own marriage.

Much chastened, I moved onto 'Don'ts for Husbands' with a more open mind. Once again, I was surprised at how relevant much of Ms Ebbutt's advice is to today's relationships and the progressiveness of some of the points, considering the era in which the book was written.

It is a shame that these books have been so unknown for so long, as I feel that the advice in them is more relevant to a newly married couple than a dozen books of the Men Are from Mars, Women Are from Venus: The Classic Guide to Understanding the Opposite Sex persuasion. I would venture to go so far as to state that a copy of each of these books should be given to the happy couple as a wedding present (or perhaps a housewarming gift for those in less formal arrangements). Certainly anybody in a permanent relationship should consider reading them. You will be surprised at just how much you are doing wrong.

Timeless advice!

The pair of little books "Dont's for Wives/Dont's for Husbands" sheds an amazing light into the common sense approach to marriage that has worked through the ages. My husband and I got a kick out of them. Written in 1913, before Women's Sufferage had brought women the right to vote in some areas, the advice is remarkably well balanced and I'd say rivals Dr. Laura's in the areas of courtesy bringing bliss! Patience is a theme, as is compromise, appreciation of each other's differences in opinion, turning off your ego, and realistic statements about love not being bought, and making sure you stay on the same "team" with your spouse.

Buy these books as a pair, the differences are also entertaining. Only the "Wives" version has a chapter on "Avoiding Discord"! The author aptly states, "Takes two to quarrel, don't be one of them!"

interesting...

This is a tiny book, maybe 3" x 5". It's interesting from a social/cultural studies point of view. Some of the advice is still good...some things never change...and the rest is still good to read ( such as, don't flick your ashes on the drawing room carpet ). After I got my copy of this book, and the "Don'ts for Wives", I ordered multiple copies of each, and I plan to order more.

After examining the aftermath of major conflicts, the authors identify national growth as the determining factor in a nation's recovery. With victory, national capabilities may increase or decrease; with defeat, losses can be enormous. Unexpectedly, however, in less than two decades, losers make up for their losses and all combatants find themselves where they would have been had no war occurred.

Finally, the authors address the question of nuclear arsenals. They find that these arsenals do not make the difference that is usually assumed. Nuclear weapons have not changed the structure of power on which international politics rests. Nor does the behavior of participants in nuclear confrontation meet the expectations set out in deterrence theory.

A nuanced view of what it takes to be a leader - with surprising information for women leaders

I especially recommend this book for coaches who work with senior executives on a range of leadership issues, not just on what is traditionally viewed as "executive presence". The unique contribution of the work being done by Suzanne Bates is to both widen and clarify our understanding of the factors that define executive presence. I find the concepts and stories in the book are invaluable for quickly starting a positive developmental conversation with leaders at all levels, but especially those at the top. I have also found that her research on how women leaders are perceived has real value for those who think "lack of confidence" is a "woman's problem". The book is worth adding to your coaching library for that section alone!

While the volume encompasses a range of different cases, specific issues, and diverse methodologies, all the chapters address two dominant themes--the continuities and changes in the institutional underpinnings of capitalist development and the main driving forces behind them. The book thus provides an integrated analysis of how changing institutional practices in business, financial, and labor systems interact and affect the evolution of capitalist political economies in the region.

About the Author

Andrew Walter is Reader in International Political Economy and Research Associate in the Department of Management at the London School of Economics and Political Science, and Academic Director of the TRIUM Global Executive MBA Programme. He sits on the Council of Chatham House, a leading British think-tank of international affairs, and on the Academic Advisory Panel of The International Centre for Financial Regulation. His research has focused primarily on the political economy of global financial and monetary relations, with a regional focus on East Asia. His recent books include Governing Finance: East Asia's Adoption of International Standards (Cornell University Press, 2008), Analyzing the Global Political Economy (Princeton University Press, 2009, with Gautam Sen), and China, the United States, and Global Order (Cambridge University Press, 2011, with Rosemary Foot).

Xiaoke Zhan is Professor at the Manchester Business School, the University of Manchester. His research interests are in comparative political economy, with a regional focus on East Asia. His recent publications include The Political Economy of Capital Market Reforms in Southeast Asia (Palgrave Macmillan 2011) and International Financial Governance under Stress (Cambridge University Press, 2003, with Geoffrey R.D. Drury is brilliant

Steve Drury is brilliant in this instant classic on intuition! I thought the book so far has been very informative and has helped me to expand both mind and intelligence while teaching me some pretty awesome tricks that I can do and guess what they are propless. This allows you to engage all your senses and focus on your magic. When I am in tune I am even able to cut to the highest card in a game of poker the aces!!! Naming the emptiness

This book helped me to identify exactly what IS this numbness, darkness, vague empty feeling. Its source is understandable and not nearly as dark once it has a name. Being emotionally neglected put me into survival mode as a child and I repressed and neglected my own needs believing they didn't matter. I grew up not understanding who I was or what my feelings were. This book helps to identify that process, offers different examples of unavailable mothers, and provides examples of what healing looks like. There are no definitive answers for healing but I think that's so unique for everyone.

I know it can be very painful if you are trying to heal your experiences as a child with a mother who didn't have time for you, but this book helps a LOT. You'll learn about your fear of abandonment (the core issue), how to face your feeling of anger, resentment and hurt, how to overcome negative emotions, how to forgive your mother and yourself, and much, much more. It has the potential to change your life for the better--highly recommended.

Really well written book. Book did a great job of explaining, in layman's terms, a very difficult topic. Really good explanation about what an emotionally absent mother actually is and how it can effect us as adults. I also thought it did a good job of explaining why mothers can be absent, which is sometimes difficult to see from a child's point of view. Good insight. Highly recommend!

Karl Barth was described by Pope Pius XII as the most important theologian since Thomas Aquinas, the Swiss Pastor and Theologian, and Barth continues to be a major influence on students, scholars and preachers. This section of the “Church Dogmatics” is where Jurgen Moltmann concentrated when becoming Barth’s successor, and when formulating his 1965 “THEOLOGY OF HOPE”. It is a “center-piece” of the entire “Dogmatics”. Make sure you get this volume. The volume addresses justification, community, and faith; but, it radically addresses “promise and hope” as foundational categories for the Christian faith. As usual, I recommend small portions at a time, so the richness of Barth’s content is not missed. I found the following group of short lessons:
1. Justification-judgement-teleology pp. 1-30
2. Riddle of history-unification-man of tomorrow pp. 30-50
3. Pardon-Creatio ex Nihilo-righteousness pp. 50-70
4. Promissio-forgiveness-lively hope pp. 77-94
5. Confession-reckoned-obedience pp. 94-116
6. Solus christus-justifying faith-history pp. 116-130
7. Henosis-apodeixis-ekklesia kuriake pp. 130-150
8. Unam-sanctum-catholicam ecclesiam pp. 150-200
9. Apostolic-biblical-advent authority pp. 201-229
10. Relationship-orientation-correspondence pp. 230-268

As I said, everything in this volume is directed toward promise and hope in the Christ-Event. And it was powerfully appropriated by Jurgen Moltmann; who made Barth popular in the United States in 1967. It is an excellent chance to study the original Barth documentation that addresses this eschatological-faith. NOTHING BUT PRAISE HERE: 5 BIG STARS

Landmark Achievement

Karl Barth is arguably the most important theologian in the past centuries. Church Dogmatics, his magnum opus, is the core of Barth's life work. The past decade has witnessed tremendous growth in Barthian studies. Although Church Dogmatics has been available in English for years, there are long untranslated quotations in Latin, Greek and German that are essential for understanding Barth's thought.
The new Study Edition of Church Dogmatics contains English translations of these passages for those of us who are not fluent in the original languages. The original page numbering is preserved for ease and consistency of reference.
This 33 volume project will open Barth's magisterial thinking to new generations of scholars. It is a landmark achievement.

Another great book by Karl Barth.

His whole series is outstanding! It does take me a while to read, but I am becoming more familiar with this style and his series is becoming easier to read with each volume!
