Every little bit helps

I've read several of Joyce's books, and I find them as a rule inspired, candid, and insightful. I'm reading a short one now on rejection that has some very powerful messages. All this to say that while this particular review is going to be a little rough I have enjoyed and been edified by everything else I've read by her. She is scriptural and positive without overdoing it, at least in her books, on what some call "Name it, claim it, frame it"- or Word of Faith.

This particular book seems mislabeled- it would probably be more aptly titled something relating to the Baptism in the Holy Spirit. A very large part of the book encourages people to seek God for this gift as the way to intimacy and power with God. Since most of her readers are probably already charismatic/pentecostal they've already taken this foundational step and much of the book is not a direct benefit to them. For a new believer or someone not baptized in the Spirit I'd recommend it, otherwise there are plenty of other books out there, some by Joyce herself, that are probably going to be more beneficial to the reader trying to get from

point A to point B.

This Book Has Changed My Life

This book has changed my life in more ways than one, and also my way of thinking.

Joyce Meyer has spelt out in her own words simply how we can maintain a closer walk with God and attain the Holy Spirit dwelling in our lives completely for as long as we want. With obedience and the hunger and longing in our hearts, it can be done.

This remarkable teacher brings a wealth of experiences to us readers, and what I like about her teaching is that she never fails to share with us readers, her past failings and how she has overcome them through great courage, praying and listening to God. Great, but here's why

The book is written in a conversational way. As a result, it is sometime hard to follow. The fact that I occasionally see Joyce's TV show helped me to understand the rhythm of her sentences.
Still, the book is a MUST HAVE. I found the book enjoyable and inspirational. The reason this book - like Joyce's other books - is so well rated is because it is so sincere. She does NOT preach at you or bore you. Instead, her conversation comes across as if she is sitting in your living room. Her experiences are real and - to be honest - we have all had similar experiences. The gift that Joyce gives through this book is that she affirms what you already knew... God has acted in your life and he is acting now AND you aren't the only one that occasionally either gets or misses the message! Then, she tells you how to start identifying with God in those experiences.
The book starts with a discussion of finding God in your life. From there, she talks about the gifts that will be given to you by the spirit. Like Mrs. Meyers, the message in this book is realistic and applies to life today.

Pioneer Spirit Must Read

Rose, the daughter of Laura Ingalls Wilder, penned this poignant story of her grandparents' 19th century American pioneer experience. I imagine she sat for hours listening to Caroline and Charles Ingalls (Little House on the Prairie), retell the adventurous season of their honeymoon year spent on the Dakota frontier and knew it would make a great book. The tale recounts the journey of the two teens who stake a claim and ride out the complications of prairie living. Within the pages of the book, Charles and Caroline discover that the world is a harsh place, but with grace and stamina they can find the resiliency to beat the elements and live a happy life. I hope to order the book for my high school students in our international school as it deals with universal themes faced by all people. What makes the Ingalls come out on top? Read to see. You won't be disappointed in this short but powerful read. The pioneer spirit prevails but not without a little help from Love. (The newer version called Young Pioneers renames the protagonists Molly and David, perhaps to give the later printing an current feel.)

A real gem! Should be required reading!

This is such a beautifully written book - I have recommended it to others and each one who has read it has adored it. I've always loved Laura Ingall Wilder's books and was reading about her on Wikipedia the other day, when I read the entry on Rose Wilder Lane and was intrigued. I took out this book and Old Hometown from the libary and am hooked - they are beautifully written and evocative books. What a wonderful storyteller! Let the Hurricane Roar really does give you an idea of what the pioneers and their wives went through - her descriptions of the wife's plight were especially moving and took away any self-pity I might ever feel for a bad day at home!

About the Author
Branko Ristic is a senior research scientist in the Tracking and Sensor Fusion Group at the ISR Division of DSTO, Edinburgh, Australia. In 2002 he was awarded the Defence Science Fellowship by the Information Sciences Laboratory of DSTO. He earned his Ph.D. at the Signal Processing Research Centre of Queensland University of Technology, Australia.

Sanjeev Arulampalam is a senior research scientist in the Submarine Combat Systems Group, Maritime Operations Division of DSTO, Edinburgh, Australia. In 2000 he was awarded the Anglo-Australian postdoctoral fellowship by the Royal Academy of Engineering, London. He earned his Ph.D. in electrical and electronics engineering at the University of Melbourne, Australia.

Neil Gordon is a senior research scientist in the Tracking and Sensor Fusion Group at the ISR Division of DSTO, Edinburgh, Australia. Dr Gordon earned his Ph.D. in statistics at the Imperial College, University of London.

Good book

This a really good book for someone who is familiar with the Kalman filter, and wants to learn alternatives, particularly the particle filter. The first section provides a very concise introduction to nonlinear filtering, then a good derivation of the particle filter. The second section shows may different tracking applications that can use a particle filter and discusses different variations of the basic algorithm in relation to the application.

Excellent Intro to Particle Filtering

Particle filtering is a powerful method for nonlinear, non-Gaussian state estimation. Having worked in the area for several years, I would say that this book is one of the best introductions available. Unlike other books on the subject which are highly theoretical, this one is steeped in down-to-earth language. Besides giving a very good tutorial overview, it considers a number of practical applications with a separate chapter devoted to each. Studying these help a lot in learning how to apply the filter. I recommend this book highly.
