  Charles Spurgeon is a senior technology architect at the University of Texas at Austin, where he works on a campus network system serving over 70,000 users in 200 buildings on two campuses. He has developed and managed large campus networks for many years, beginning at Stanford University, where he worked with a group that built the prototype Ethernet routers that became the founding technology for Cisco Systems. Charles, who attended Wesleyan University, lives in Austin, Texas, with his wife, Joann Zimmerman, and their cat Mona.

  Joann Zimmerman is a former software engineer with a doctorate in art history from the University of Texas at Austin. She has written and documented compilers, software tools and network monitoring software, and been a creator of the build and configuration management process for several companies. The author of papers in software engineering and Renaissance art history, she currently she has multiple fantasy novels in process.

  A Brief Overview not a technical book

  This is a decent 1 day read on Switch Technology and getting you up to par what is out there. By no means is this a theoretical book to learn switches just how switches have changed and the new services they can offer. I enjoyed the quick read on some of the technology new switches offer. Don't listen to the person above. They didn't read the description. THIS IS JUST AN OVERVIEW ON SWITCH TECHNOLOGY NOT IN DEPTH ON HOW IT WORKS. If you want to catch up on what services switches can offer in the present then buy it. If you are looking for a book to explain the switching process do not buy. I enjoyed it for what it is. Thanks.

This book is very detailed. The book provides guidelines on the construction and development of nations in a medieval fantasy setting. Specific topics include, among others, geography, economics, magic, technology, and adventure hooks. Well worth the price, especially with the Amazon discount. It also has some new classes for your d20 games. I found this book to be very useful, not only to an RPGer but also as an author for creating and developing your own fantasy worlds and cultures.This is a great worldbuilding reference for any roleplaying game or writer.

Playing for Time, a grade-A book by Fania Fenelon, is a document not only about the Holocaust, but one that goes deeper: it shows how music brought redemption of spirit in the Hell of Hells. When Fania and her friend are brought to the death camp of Auschwitz-Birkenau, she is recognized by a girl in the camp's orchestra as a Parisian caberet singer. She is accepted in to the orchestra, where she is forced to sing the opera Madame Butterfly for the SS. Fania does not let the hardships of the camp take over her spirit, though. She uses music as a weapon, and, as an orchestrator as well as singer for the group, she orchestrates marches by Jews and anti-Nazis right under the noses of her captors, who never catch on. Fania's love of music allows her to survive Auschwitz, and when she is sent with the rest of the "Orchestra Girls" to Bergen-Belsen near the end of the war, her passion for life pulls her through a severe case of typhus. One day she learns that the Nazis are going to shoot the prisoners of Bergen-Belsen at 3:00 that afternoon. The English arrive at the camp at 11:00 that same morning. Fania just barely survived the war, and afterwards she returned to Paris and started again as a caberet singer. She died of cancer in her hometown in 1983. Playing for Time teaches us many things. It teaches us that the human spirit cannot be killed. It teaches us that good always wins over evil. And it teaches us that if you have a love, stick to it. One day it might just save your life.

The Perfect Book

This is an absolutely incredible book. An already powerful story it is taken to a new level by the constant reminder that this is first hand experience.
It is perfect for nearly anyone, the musician will relate to the music, the historian to the accuracy and the avid reader will simply latch on and be unable to let go.
It brought tears to my eyes.

What can be believed??

I enjoyed reading this book, even though the content is difficult to comprehend with all of the horrors of Auschwitz/Birkenau and Bergen-Belsen. According to several orchestra members, a good portion of Fania's "memoirs" is inaccurate, which I think is a shame. This was brought to light in the book Alma Rose: From Vienna to Auschwitz. I would recommend reading both Playing for Time and Alma Rose: From Vienna to Auschwitz to get a better picture of what life was like for the orchestra. I was also very disappointed to read Fania's degrading names she used for the Polish prisoners, which sadly shows her racist views.

About the Author

Kim Knott is Professor of Religious and Secular Studies. Previously at the University of Leeds but now at Lancaster University, she teaches the study of religions, including Hinduism, and researches religious/secular controversies and religion in public life, focusing on the media, conflict and security. She has authored and edited a number of books, including Media Portrayals of Religion and the Secular Sacred (Ashgate 2013) with Elizabeth Poole and Teemu Taira, Diasporas: Concepts, Intersections, Identities (2010) with Sean McLoughlin and The Location of Religion: A Spatial Analysis (2005). She has also produced a website for young people and teachers of Global Education, Citizenship, History and Geography called Moving People, Changing Places.

New to this second edition is a most interesting chapter in which Knott addresses herself to contemporary concerns for Hindus such as changes in the use of IT and social media, and the ways in which this has transformed global communications in the Hindu diaspora and Hindu practics. She also puts forward an up-to-date analysis of recent debates on early India, Aryans, and the Veda, reflecting the increasing politicization of Hinduism and rise of identity politics.

This book makes a prolific, historical documented case for index fund investing. Mark Hebner persistently and convincingly takes apart Wall St. and exposes the long-time falsehoods of the mutual fund, active management, and brokerage industry.
This is all uniquely packaged in an incredible visual journey - with rich illustrations that brings everything to life. This book raises the bar simply for what a modern-day finance book should be.

The amount of documentation and proof is incredible alone. You will see many graphs and data sets that are not published elsewhere.

Nobody beats the markets for very long and the road to speculation which non-indexers do, leads often to ruin. Wall St. simply runs an endless beauty pageant - that delivers short.

Buy this book, index invest, and receive the fair market return you deserve.

His research is documented by nobel laureate academics and topical industry evidence he meticulously obtained for our benefit. The basic facts to be culled from this book are....
1. To successfully out perform the market you must pick investments at a positive rate of 74% or better.
2. The best "so called" financial analyst "guru's" forecast accuracy (between 1997 and 2011) range from a 26% to 67% success rate.....these people don't dabble, they forecast for a living.
3. ALL legitimate financial geniuses with decades of experience agree that trying to time the market will make brokers rich and you poor.
4.Investing in a passively managed index fund will allow you to to reap returns at market levels while providing you with the ability to achieve peace of mind.
5. If you must gamble, budget for a trip to Vegas and only lose what you can afford to while actually having fun!

Mark Hebner's beautiful new book

I own the original and much larger, "Index Funds" book by author, Mark Hebner. I was pleased to see he has updated the original with a shorter edition. I wasted no time reading it.

I have read hundred's of financial books and this book is the most beautiful with dozens of artistic pictures and graphs to give the reader an enjoyable reading experience. Mr. Hebner uses his vast knowledge of stock market history to inform and persuade, even the most skeptical, that indexing is now the smart way for individuals to invest. Jack Bogle will be pleased.

The second installment on Moskalenko's survey of the French

After a quirky detour into the realm of chess pedagogy with Revolutionize Your Chess Moskalenko returns to the writing of pithy opening manuals with "The Wonderful Winawer." The astute reader would do well to consider this as a continuation of Moskalenko's survey of the French Defence, Flexible French: Strategic Explanations & Surprise Weapons for Dynamic Players, to which he occasionally refers, but both volumes also stand alone. Both books are of similar length (WW 272 pages/FF 279) with about 30 pages devoted to 2 Black Winawer sidelines in FF. In WW Moskalenko tackles the mainline Poisoned Pawn in about 40 pages with what he refers to as a "skeleton repetoire." In general, he does a good job of covering almost all earlier deviations for both White and Black but I was disappointed with his response to Larsen's 5.Qf3 idea in the Exchange Winawer (which Watson did an excellent job rehabilitating in Dangerous Weapons: The French: Dazzle Your Opponents) which consists of one sentence: "Black gets an excellent game after the most precise move 5...Qe7+!" As always, I enjoyed Moskalenko's writing (name another chess author who would include a line such as "For this important game against Grischuk, Leinier Dominguez had prepared a Banana Daiquiri cocktail--with a little poison!") and the inclusion of photos of various players. Vive la France!

Another Moskalenko masterpiece!

Dear Readers,
Do not buy this book unless you have already purchased "THE FLEXIBLE FRENCH" by the same author!! You will regret it sincerely! This book is a continuation of the FF and ONLY covers the Winawer Variation of the French D. Most White players play 3. Nd2 instead of 3. Nc3 so the FF book will be much more valuable to you. Having said that, "Why should you purchase this book?" The immediate answer is, "to lead your opponent down the slippery slope of complications when 3. Nc3 Bb4 IS played!" If you want an "outside of the box" variation then the Winawer is truly it! Victor Moskalenko's book IS wonderful and gives a very detailed analysis and history of this variation in this regard. I sense the author couldn't include this work in the FF book since it would have been too much for digestion and retention. Very good decision on part of the author and publishers. The WW book has three parts:

P1: "Black and White Deviations"
P2: "The Sub and Old Winawer" and
P3: "The Ultimate Winawer" for a total of eleven chapters.
Each chapter is broken into detailed analysis of the mainline opening moves of the WW with the following improvements:

1. the reference game moves are in bold print and commented,

2. the primary alternative moves are in bold italics; branching into sub-variations and alternate variations with sub-variations outlined by A) then A1), A2), B), then B1a), B2) etc. followed by numbered sub-variations as needed,

3. Even more sub-titled analysis diagrams are added to improve the reading and visual flow of the book, after the main alternate moves and sub-variations.

4. the author gives a statistical reference and history beginning each chapter, helping the reader know the number of games researched for the variation and winning potential if used, also with a comment, and

5.the reference games come from mostly exclusive French players or French Terminators! (love or hate the french D) Who says the second time around isn't better than the first? All opening guides could take a follow of this book! Black immediately goes for the counter punch in this variation and only has to remember a few lines to play well, meanwhile White has to prove his ability. Again this book teaches you how to play this French variation and if you have purchased the FF by the same author you will be ready for play.
P1 covers deviations after 3. Nc3 Bb4 mostly encountered using statistics;

P2 covers without the exchange on c3 with the sub Winawer chps. 4 & 5, 4. e5 c5 5. a3 and with c3 exchange the Old Winawer chps. 6 (Armenian variation), 7 (Knight system) and 8 (Eingorn variation);

P3 covers the Ultimate Winawer in chps. 9 (Warsaw variation) 10 Poisoned Pawn variation (PPV)) and 11 (Black Queen Blues (BQB)). Commonly played lines from professional games are deeply analised and commented with improvements to the referenced game moves.
As a reader, you shouldn't expect repertoire books to hold your hand through a chess game but be a good guide, allowing you to develop your own style and creativity during play. Our play improves knowing what to do at the appointed time and situation. This book and author's writing style help you accomplish that task. I had the opportunity to play this variation in CC play right off the starting block after purchasing this book and wow! I'm holding my own against master players! Buy this book and enjoy the wondrous Winawer ride!! If you have the opportunity to play this variation as BLACK, White players will not know what hit them!

It misses something

Even though the book brings new ideas about the winawer, i think the analisys are too much extensive.There are to many sub variations to check, but the explanations of the main ideas doesn't follow the flexible french standard, what let the presented concepts a bit weaker.
I recomend the flexible french, but this one is not so good.

There's a much better version

Based on the text sample, this appears to be a reprint of '101 Zen Stories'.
These really are not Koans as such, but are better thought of as a nice
philosophical "warm up" for dealing with actual koans, or "public cases".

'101 Zen Stories' has previously been included in "Zen Flesh, Zen Bones",
which is a much better presentation in my opinion because it also includes
the Mumonkan, 48 "real" koans, and the 10 oxherding pictures, which are
like a short "picture-book" of the process of enlightenment.

However, "Zen Flesh, Zen Bones" doesn't appear to have a Kindle version yet,
so that would be the only reason for buying this version.

Good materials for pondering

I studied Zen in college, and I've always thought it interestingly compatible with Christian ideas, but outside of the sound of one hand clapping, I haven't had the chance to ponder many Koans. Problem solved. To boot, these aren't riddles so much as windows, both into the mindset of Zen, and into ancient (and modern) Asian culture.

This book although not a complete compendium of Zen Koans definitely is a good read. The stories, both familiar and new are great to read and reflect upon. With each reading new insights can be found as one's life and moods change. Definitely handy for that early morning read to supplement checking one's horoscope. Reading a koan or two can set the stage for a great day.
