Review

4 Stars: "This tale is set in the fictional castle Montebello somewhere in Europe around 1940, when war breaks out. The castle is seized by the Imperial Army, headed by Prince Mefist who decides to use Montebello because of its strategic location. Prince Mefist soon demands the younger nuns for the officers' bordello and forces Therese (Mother Superior Therese) to choose between giving in to his demands or he will seize women from the local village. Therese resigns to the inevitable and assumes her new position of Madam, thus ensuring her continued support of the nuns. Though soon enough Therese finds she is falling under the spell of the Prince. You will need to keep an open mind when reading this story about a group of nuns who become prostitutes. This book is one of the more controversial erotic novels.  Although at times Prince Mefist and his sister, Wanda, are blasé about what is forced on these nuns, I still found this story kept me interested to discover the fate of these women. It was well written and it displayed emotional depth and character development, as well as the differing viewpoints of the various characters. The author does not intentionally set out to titillate the readers. The [book] is interesting and there are some very HOT moments with some very tasteful scenes. The premise offered here is that this may be a situation born out of the necessity of war; these women simply have no other choice. This book also centers on the story of Therese's sexual awakening through Mefist and his sister, Wanda. With their help Therese is awakened to a life of deep sensuality, but also craving intimacy from the man she loves, Mefist. Prince Mefist is a charismatic, handsome, and debonair character who easily maniapulates but also treats people under his charge with care and kindness. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend this book." -- Aggie Tsirikas, Just Erotic Romance Reviews

very hot
By Cloggie Downunder
The Prince and the Nun is one of the earlier novels by Jacqueline George and is set in 1940 in the Slovakian village of Krasna Dolina. Therese von Falberg is Mother Superior of the Sisters of Magdalene, whose Convent is housed in Montebello Castle and also the Chatelaine of the Castle whilst the reigning Count Egerhazy and his family have fled to America at the first rumblings of war. When Captain Prince Franz Mefist of the Imperial Army turns up to establish his Army base at the Castle, he matter-of-factly informs Therese he will need a dozen of her nuns to entertain his officers in the Officers Club. At her shocked refusal, he orders some village women to be found for the purpose. Therese soon realises that, to save the wives and daughters of the village, she will have to agree to become the Madam of the nuns' bordello. Mefist's cousin Wanda turns up to help the nuns become courtesans and the girls are happy to follow orders. But as a nun, Therese finds her growing attraction to Mefist and her curiosity about sex disturbing.
I have always enjoyed sexy romance and erotica, but what drew me to this novel was the plot. At first I was unsure about nuns in the 40s being so uninhibited, then I decided that with their vow of obedience to their Mother Superior and Franz's and Wanda's charisma and after all, it's the war, I could accept that and sit back and enjoy the story. Certainly, none of the nuns who taught me were like these: I guess I was taught by Sister Brigitte clones. I remain intrigued at where Therese drew the line on her own personal acceptable behaviour. This story has plenty of humour and romance and some very hot sex in different flavours. The backstory of the war goings-on give the plot realism and some lighter relief between the hotter scenes. The characters had some depth and novel asks some ethical questions about life during wartime. I would have liked a bit more of Therese and Mefist at the end. The name of the sisters' order was a cute touch, considering the profession of Mary Magdalene. I enjoyed this novel and I think it would translate well into an adult movie.

Honest Doubt: The History Of An Epic Struggle, by Richard Holloway

These are the transcripts of the BBC Radio 4 series "Honest Doubt: The History of an Epic Struggle". It was first broadcast as a series of twenty 15-minute episodes between 28 May and 22 June 2012, rebroadcast as four 1-hour omnibus editions on Friday evenings throughout June 2012. The series was written and presented by writer and former Bishop of Edinburgh Richard Holloway, and produced by Olivia Landsberg at Ladbroke Productions.
In "Honest Doubt", Richard Holloway considers some of the universal questions about our existence and the meaning of life, and how some of humanity's best thinkers and most creative writers have approached these 'literally life and death questions'. In exploring the relationship between faith and doubt over the last 3000 years, he looks at its impact from the birth of religious thinking, through the Old and New Testaments, the Middle Ages, the Reformation, the Enlightenment, the Victorian period, the horrors of World War II, right up to today.

Celebrating unknowingness
By Jack Wonder
This is about religious doubt. I very much enjoyed the series when it was first broadcast last year on BBC Radio 4. Reading the transcript has allowed me to stop and think, and above all to revel in the state of unknowingness. Gods seem to have been dying almost as soon as they emerged from the twilight of humanity's consciousness; yet their creation was a pivotal event in recognising the Other (as Feuerbach cogently argued). Perhaps an honest doubt is that indispensable Other of faith? As Richard Holloway says: "doubt is coactive with faith - they are two sides of the same coin".

In the hands of great poets and writers (e.g. Tennyson, Keats, Dostoyevsky), thinkers (Voltaire, Nietzsche, Wittgenstein) and scientists (Copernicus, Newton, Darwin), doubt is elevated to the summit of human thought. Tennyson's wonderful poem In Memoriam was an inspiration for the series' title:

"There lives more faith in honest doubt,
Believe me, than in half the creeds."

It is doubt - not certainty - that has made humanity what it is. Certainty has had a paralysing effect not just on religion but also on science, and 'the golden calves' of science (with an air of awe-inspiring 'evidence') can be ever so alluring. Those who challenge any entrenched paradigm are in for a lot of flak: burning at stake, derision, ostracism. Yet, paradoxically, it's the doubters and the challengers that keep human thought alive!

Richard Holloway and his collaborators impress me greatly not only with their humility towards the mystery of existence but also with their sincere respect towards a reader/listener. They communicate thoughts in a clear yet poetic language, without a shade of patronising or hubris. In their hands, doubt is not only honest, it is also superbly modest.

I enjoyed the production's refusal to use conventional tropes to explain or answer the difficult questions we ask ourselves.

This Is Not a Game: A Novel, by Walter Jon Williams

Once upon a time, there were four of them. And though each was good at a number of things, all of them were very good at games...

Dagmar is a game designer trapped in Jakarta in the middle of a revolution. The city is tearing itself apart around her and she needs to get out.

Her boss Charlie has his own problems -- 4.3 billion of them, to be precise, hidden in an off-shore account.

Austin is the businessman -- the VC. He's the one with the plan and the one to keep the geeks in line.

BJ was there from the start, but while Charlie's star rose, BJ sank into the depths of customer service. He pads his hours at the call-center slaying on-line orcs, stealing your loot, and selling it on the internet.

But when one of them is gunned down in a parking lot, the survivors become players in a very different kind of game. Caught between the dangerous worlds of the Russian Mafia and international finance, Dagmar must draw on all her resources -- not least millions of online gamers-- to track down the killer. In this near-future thriller, Walter Jon Williams weaves a pulse-pounding tale of intrigue, murder, and games where you don't get an extra life.

From Publishers Weekly
Starred Review. Williams (The Rift) weaves intriguing questions about games, gamers and their relationships with real life into this well-paced near-future thriller. Game designer Dagmar specializes in creating alternate reality games that muddle the line between fantasy and reality. Trapped in riot-torn Jakarta, she reaches out to the gamer community for help. Once back in Los Angeles, Dagmar is caught up in a web of murders and financial manipulation that she begins to blend into her latest game, using the community of players to solve clues and sift through large amounts of data. The line between real life and the game blurs as the action builds to a satisfying and thoughtful conclusion. Though the technology talk occasionally becomes intrusive, it's convincingly written; the characters are realistic and absorbing, and the story deeply compelling. (Mar.)

William's best book in some time...
By Ian K.
I've been reading Walter Jon Williams since he wrote Hardwired and Voice Of The Whirlwind. But I have not found his recent work as good as the books he wrote all those years ago. For example, I thought that Implied Spaces was a weak book. I was pleasantly surprised by This Is Not A Game, which I found to be Williams' best book in some time.

The book is written in a three act form. The first part of the book is fascinating and sets the context for the moral issues that arise later in the book. Reading this book it seemed to me that Williams was "doing" an impression of William Gibson, picking up on some of the themes that Gibson has touched on. I enjoyed this, especially because Gibson hasn't been doing Gibson much these days (sadly his Spook Country was one of his weakest books). Nor do I see anything wrong with one artist being influenced by another.

This Is Not A Game is set in the relatively near future. One of the things I enjoyed about this book is its technological speculation. I am a computer scientist and I found most of the speculation reasonable. There was some suspension of disbelief required when it comes to the ability of software to "learn", but I didn't find that this detracted from my enjoyment of the story.

One way I judge a book is whether I'm still thinking about it after I've finished reading it. I keep thinking of bits and pieces of This Is Not A Game.

High Tech Plot Steals the Show
By Darth Dragonetti
"This is Not A Game" is a 2008 novel by science fiction writer Walter Jon Williams. It is not hard science fiction, but can rather be classified as a high-tech thriller.

It is rather tricky to describe the plot of "This is Not a Game" (TINAG). The plot revolves around the main character, Dagmar Shaw, who is a writer, or 'puppetmaster," for a type of game that is organized online, but involves elements that must be completed in the real world. The "game" can be thought of as an MMORPG (massively multiplayer online role-playing game) that requires players to get out into the world rather than playing the game 100 percent behind a computer screen. When one of Shaw's colleagues is mysteriously murdered, she solicits help from the players of her online games to help solve the mystery (and without telling them that the scenario is real). However, as the body count rises, Shaw finds herself neck-deep in a nefarious and high-tech plot that could have ramifications for the entire world.

Unfortunately, the main plot is very slow to get off the ground. The first third of the book almost seems like a different story entirely, though Williams connects it to the rest of the plot later on, and in a creative way. Even when the ball does get rolling, the plot doesn't move at the breakneck pace that one would expect of a modern thriller, and the chapters seem overly lengthy. However, the technology end of the plot is fascinating and it is difficult to discern where the real world ends and the fictions begins. The convincing use of technology is reminiscent of a Michael Crichton novel, a testament to Mr. Williams's strong grasp of where the future might take us.

The main characters are almost entirely Millennials. Readers in their 20s and 30s will understand the characters, but older readers might be turned off (and might find the gaming angle to be foreign to them). The characters are interesting and are realistically realized, but a lack of other types of characters makes the novel less interesting and less accessible.

TINAG is well-written and does a good job of straddling the line between sci-fi vs thriller. The dialogue seems real and believable, as does the obvious pain-staking research. However, there does seem to be a change of tone from part 1 of the novel to the rest of the novel, almost as if part 1 was originally conceived as a separate novel or story, and later combined with the rest of the novel.

Overall, TINAG is novel worth exploring, particularly if you enjoy a thriller with a high-tech plot.

In Summation:

The Good:
-believable, high-tech plot
-well-researched
-characters seem true to type
-effective marriage of thriller and sci-fi

The Bad:
-not fast paced enough
-part 1 doesn't fit
-lack of variety in characters

Brisk and readable, but a little obvious
By C. Claiborn
I like Williams' work, and both "Aristoi" and "Metropolitan" are favorites. "Game" is a couple of steps below those. The first (and best) segment, in which a Dagmar, game producer is forced to rely upon strangers on the Internet for help escaping a collapsed state, is tense and tightly-plotted. The second, longer segment, which tells the story of Dagmar's game and a few real-life murders that may or may not be attached to the game's events, works less well.

Part of the problem may be that Williams simply doesn't have anywhere to go: he introduces only four characters of any consequence, and one of them is the narrator, so any mysteries will be solved after the second murder. That limited scope is a feature of the work in general: although we're told about 3 million people playing the game, there can't be more than six or seven people named in the book. Williams keeps only a very narrow window open on the action. Because of this, the book flies by, but there aren't any surprises for the alert reader.

A couple of moments in the novel that don't amount to much--the inept Israeli security company, the kung-fu Muslims who save Dagmar--gave me the impression that this book might have been trimmed down from something longer. If that's the case, it's too bad; a little more flesh on the bones of this story might have made the second half of the novel feel less inexorable.

Others have done this better.
By Von Junzt
I bought this book hoping to learn more about the Nation of Islam's idea of Yakub, the man Elijah Muhammad said created the white, blue-eyed devils. I was sorely disappointed. Blake Fardan barely touches on the story in this book. I read the whole book, but even though it's less than 150 pages, I somewhat regret wasting my valuable time.

What Blake Fardan does write is a treatise on how whites have abused blacks. Some of this material is true and worthy of consideration -- but has been dealt with much more adequately by other authors. The horrors of the slave trade, for example, is amply dealt with in most histories, and institutional racism does continue to be a problem. Her portrayal of whites stealing culture from black Egyptians and hiding it in the rituals of Freemasonry is ill supported by the facts available to a Ph.D. in anthropology, however, and one would have expected her to have buttressed this argument with more data than secondary sources which can be obtained from grocery store paperbacks. This is the doctrine of Elijah Muhammad -- but we can learn that from the man himself. Entities within the U.S. government may well have been involved in distributing narcotics within the United States, but she should cite more than one source to prove this.

Blake Fardan is incapable of understanding that social forces are impersonal as well as personal. The 5+ pages spent on how the white man has evilly planted the need for expensive car stereos into the black man's heart could be better understood with a reference to Rousseau -- society creates needs that did not exist in nature. I think black men should be able to decide for themselves whether they want subwoofers, though I understand that capitalism and capitalists generated this desire. Blake Fardan seems to think whites should be kind and not sell subwoofers.

Troubingly, Blake Fardan does pervert the teachings of the Nation for her own ideological gain. Blake Fardan is a white woman, one of those who joined the Nation during a brief window following Warith Deen Muhammad's restructuring of the organization. She portrays herself as somehow a Caucasian but not white. This runs counter to the whole idea of Yakub, which is that Yakub created whites such that they are biologically inferior and inclined towards evil. This largely is a tract about how Blake Fardan herself should be held blameless, while she wags her finger at the rest of Western civilization. One wishes Blake Fardan had done something more worthwhile to alleviate her white liberal guilt.

Perhaps the most irritating part of the book are its many typoes and Blake Fardan's poor writing style. It seems to have been poorly digitized via some scanning and OCR software and never proofread. This is in addition to the weak writing one expects in a blog but not in a published book that has gone through three editions.

In short, if you're thinking of buying this book, save your money. And if you're thinking of getting it out of some library that foolishly bought it, save your time. If you want to know about the teachings of the Nation of Islam, read Elijah Muhammad's Message to the Blackman in America (or, for the Yakub story specifically, Nasir Makr Hakim's compilation of his writings, Yakub: The Father of Mankind). If you want to read about how whites have oppressed other ethnic groups, that material abounds elsewhere. Fardan Blake's espoused purpose, galvanizing the white man and woman to action, could have been served much better with a more thoughtful and less inflammatory (and proofread!) book.

An interesting book
By bengeeone
Dorothy Blake is historicly the first white/devil/caucasian/muslim son however you want to call pale skin humans to have join the Nation of Islam, shortly after Wallace Muhammad opened the doors to whites and started the move towards orthodox Islam. She left though as Wallace left away the early teaching of his father (in which she believes) about whites crafted origins.

So the book is interesting as it brings her perspective on Elijah Muhammad's teachings. This is a good book to collect basic informations on white supremacy, african civilizations and slavery, but you'll have to check other sources for some more in depth knowledge.
The theology and analysis exposed in the book find its limit though, as usual when you look at questions of "races", spirituality and civilisations from that perspective. The book have many truth and make good points though, but there could have been much more things to say and analyses to make. Her message to white folks is of importance and an urgent reality. A good read.

"Message to the publisher" : did anybody proof read that book? it is full of ridiculous typos, i couldn't believe that book went to print like this! i hope this will be fixed for future reprints.
