About the Author
Kent Nelson is the author of the novels Language in the Blood and Land That Moves, Land That Stands Still. His short fiction has been included in The Best American Short Stories, The Best of the West, O. Henry, Pushcart, and The Best American Mystery Stories. An avid birdwatcher, Nelson has identified 757 North American species. After the age of fifty-four, he has twice run the Pikes Peak Marathon–26.3 miles, 7,815 feet up and down. He lives in Ouray, Colorado.

With masterful description and emotion each story takes the reader along a winding road to an unfamiliar destination and an outcome that lingers long after the story is through. Mr. Nelson is the Harry Chapin of short stories.

The spirit bird was assigned for my English class and I being one who doesn't like to read was amazed. My favorite story was The Hotel Glitter, I found the story easy to read and to understand. Each story ends in a way that makes you curious as to what is going to happen next looki for a part 2. I recommend this book and I will retread the story because it's just an amazing book overall.

The play documents the 2004 Supreme Court of Canada showdown between Saskatchewan farmer Percy Schmeiser and biotech multinational Monsanto Inc., a David-and-Goliath struggle that cast Schmeiser as the small-farmer underdog fighting the unscrupulous major corporation. Monsanto accused him of growing their genetically patented Round-up Ready canola seeds on his property without paying the licensing fee they require. Through a suspenseful labyrinth of legal conflicts regarding patent rights, scientific showdowns about GM food and property clashes between farmers and the biotechnology industry, Seeds asks the essential question: “Can you patent a living thing?” Or as Schmeiser famously asked, “Who owns life?”

A most interesting aspect of the play is the ambiguity around the hero Percy Schmeiser. Is he a victim or an opportunist and self-publicist? Certainly, he’s no innocent; as he keeps telling us, he’s an experienced politician, in fact an ex-mayor. He’s a believer who knows how to frame his beliefs to advantage. He can be grand and he can be petty – and as such he is antihero as much as hero.

Named the top play of the decade by Rover Arts in its review of English theatre in Montreal between 2000 and 2010, Seeds takes us back to the seminal moment when a single farmer stood up to international agribusiness and almost won.

About the Author
Annabel Soutar is the artistic director of Porte Parole, a Montreal theater company dedicated to creating and producing original documentary plays about contemporary social and political issues. Her first play, Novembre, debuted in 2000. Since then she has written 2000 Questions (2002) and contributed to Sante! (2003), a seven-part documentary series about Quebec’s health care system. Her more recent docudrama, Sexy béton (Sexy Concrete) (2009/2010), explored the collapse of the de la Concorde overpass in 2006 and the culture of corruption in Quebec’s construction industry. Sexy béton was named a finalist for the prestigious French playwriting award Le Prix Michel-Tremblay in 2011.

Very Informative & Neatly Done.

This book covers the stunning engineering feats of the ancient world in true detail. This is written for kids ages 8-12. This is a beautiful book 7.5 x 9 inches. Hardbound, & sturdy, with some 88 lavish glossy pages & enough maps, photographs, & reproductions of period art. The clear diagrams help for illustrating the machines that are so well described. The book starts with 6 machines: the wheel & axle, inclined plane, lever, pulley, wedge, & screw.

The first chapter treats the Stone Age & shows ways in which early humans may have used the benefits behind the levers & wedges. Many readers may be surprised to learn that bows were associated with fire & drilling before arrows? Various ancient cultures are surveyed regarding the developments they made in machine technology. Example: the wheel & axle revolutionized transportation & then gave birth to spinning thread, lathes, & pulleys in Mesopatamia.

The reader will learn about the Chinese combining the wheel, lever, & axle to create the first wheel barrel. How the Roman engineer Quintus Candidius Benignus built the factory at Barbegal that could grind over 9,000 pounds of flour per day, more than enough to feed the 12,000 citizens of Arles. The text is followed by a brief glossary, bibliography, & index.

The authors style is clear & consise,. he does not patronize the lay reader which is clearly great for kids so they don't get turned off with technical terms. Many concepts in anthropology & history are also included. An example, the mystery of why the ancients did not take full advantage of their mechanical aptitudes is examined in the context of social factors like slavery & war.

I was disappointed in this book. It's very thin and has only basic information for children, although the explanations are pretty clear. There are 83 pages of larger type--not including the glossary and index.

Experimental Approach Difficult for Most Undergraduates

I teach molecular biology at a respected liberal arts college in Indiana. As a first year molecular instructor I went looking for advice on textbooks. Under recommendations from the previous instructor of this course I chose Weaver's book as an alternative to the now aging Albert Text. Frankly, the text has been a flop.
Why? Because it assumes a certain level of understanding of molecular coming into the course. A highly motivated student who has a strong background in research will enjoy this book, but as a general text it just doesn't work well. I find my students are just lost in the chapters. They are getting bogged down trying to work through all the gels and are missing the concepts being presented. I find that I must use figures from Albert's or Stryer (Biochem) to make the concepts clear. Perhaps it would be a good grad textbook with a student population that has an excellent understanding of 'gel science'.
Mostly I find it is just missing in general concepts. They summarize sections up in little orange boxes at the end which seems to be all the class seems to understand from the readings. I think they need to put more effort into making the general text more understandable to students by working on the model end and less on the experimental end.
I am not alone in my poor evaluation of this text. A prof who has been teaching the class for 15 years finally made the switch to this book this year to replace Albert. She gave up on Weaver two weeks into the class because of her class' fustration.
I would recommend this book ONLY to those who have first read it and feel it is going to be PERSONALLY useful.

An Excellent Text, But Not For Beginners

I have used this text as an undergrad and now as a grad student (in the interest of full disclosure, I am currently taking a class with Dr. Weaver and we are using this text; surprise, surprise). I found the use of experimental data to be extremely helpful, especially since molecular biology is an experimental field. It really gives one a feel for how we arrived at what we know and what was the thinking that led to it. That said, this is probably not an ideal text for an introduction to molecular biology. Students using this text should have some familiarity with genetics and cell biology. When I used this text as an undergrad (at a liberal arts college in Kansas) I was a little overwhelmed by the amount of experimental information at first, but I grew to appreciate it greatly. It allowed me to better develop analytical skills that are important for the field. On the whole, this has been probably one of the best books I have seen in this field.

Advanced Undergraduate Textbook

Molecular Biology, 4th Edition, by Robert F. Weaver

As an undergraduate science student in college, I understand the importance of having the right textbook that will effectively complement what is being provided during course lectures. To provide a little background information, this textbook was required for a third-year molecular biology course at a major public research university. According to the two instructors of the course, Molecular Biology by Weaver would be extremely thorough in covering all of the major topics in a one-quarter molecular biology course. If being used as a stand-alone textbook for students trying to gain an understanding of an introduction to molecular biology, Weaver's Molecular Biology might not be the ideal solution. Although I do not intend to discourage other students from purchasing this textbook, I should offer a warning that students should be prepared to spend a decent amount of time reading through sections of this textbook. I should note at this point that I have very mixed feelings about this textbook.

In writing this review, I am going to assume that the target audience for this textbook will be third- to fourth-year life science undergraduate majors or graduate students. As I previously stated, this textbook is by no means a CliffsNotes for understanding molecular biology. Many of the major experiments carried out in the field of molecular biology were discussed in detail in this book, notably the Meselson-Stahl experiment that demonstrated the semi-conservative replication mechanism for DNA. To be more precise, it is the experimental molecular biology portions of this textbook that are extremely detailed. A cursory examination of this book will indicate to any reader that there is an abundance of diagrams and illustrations. From a student's point of view, I find this to be particularly useful in that I am not only a more visual-oriented learner, but many of the diagrams provide decent summaries of what is trying to be conveyed by large blocks of text.

One of the major nuisances I found in this textbook are the seemingly redundant chapter summaries. After each section within a chapter a short summary consisting of a few sentences is offered to provide a type of overview for what was just discussed. At the end of each chapter, the "Chapter Summary" is simply a compilation of all of the summaries from each section in that chapter: essentially the chapter summaries are copy-paste collections of the section summaries. I cannot emphasize how infuriating it is when attempting to study for an exam and when reviewing only to encounter a gigantic block of text. Let this serve as a warning for those using this book to study for an upcoming exam: unless you create your own personalized summaries of each chapter, be prepared to pretty much read through entire chapters again in the supposed summaries.

To be fair, the often excess amount of details provided for some sections of the book are useful. The Meselson-Stahl experiment, when first presented to me in lecture, was particularly confusing, for one reason or another. The author went to great lengths to elucidate this experiment within the book. Many of the sections on DNA replication, transcription, and translation were very thorough and well-written, and provided the much-needed clarification from confusing lecture notes.

As an undergraduate science major in his third year, I am willing to accept that an undergraduate education is meant to provide an introduction of sorts to a particular field of study while simultaneously attempting to educate you in the humanities. However, this textbook is what I would deem to be much more advanced for any undergraduate course. By no means is the author at fault for providing an excellent introduction to molecular biology, but course instructors and other personnel at the departmental level should be more weary of selecting textbooks such as this one.

Algebra With Trigonometry

I wish I could give this book three and a half stars instead of four. For me, this book was good for reviewing topics already covered in class but it doesn't explain concepts in a way that it could stand on it's own. Many of the topics were difficult to understand without my lecture notes. What I do love about the book is that it gives you a lot of practice problems. Also, I should mention my class is using a different version of this book but I was still able to follow along. I haven't noticed any differences between this edition and the one my professor recommended.

Focuses on the Essentials, with Little Fluff

One of my favorite college professors used this text with freshman college students to 'catch them up' through trigonometry so they could resume their studies in math. I was impressed by the systematic way this text covers the necessary material, so when I was asked to teach algebra to a group of gifted youngsters (6th-8th) we used it. I was pleased with the way the students engaged the material, and especially pleased with the way it encouraged the development of problem-solving skills. Consequently, I've continued to use it over the years, and am pleased that we can pick up used copies on Amazon!

Rinald Murataj is a PhD Candidate in Applied Mathematics at Cornell University. Rinald has an Honorable Mention from the International Mathematics Olympiad, a Gold Medal from the National Mathematics Olympiad, and has experience training high school students in Mathematics. While at Cornell, Rinald has been a teaching assistant for many undergraduate mathematics courses. Very Valuable Book

My daughter studied this book after she did the competitor's book. She found this book way more advanced than competitors book. Her tutor who graduated from BA also said that this book goes through higher level math. Her comments were that the competitor's book was dumbed down too much for kids that are already sharp, and annoyingly repetitive. This book is definitely a cut above, and goes through the tricky kind of questions that the kids will most likely see in the placement test. Money worth spent.

I am the parent of the student that is featured ...

I am the parent of the student that is featured on the back of this book, Rusty Murataj, who is now a Strategic Asset Management student at Bergen Tech in Teterboro. Rinald taught Rusty all of the mathematical concepts in this book and practice tests in 3 intensive weeks so that Rusty was prepared to take the exam without having to go through a season long or year long course, which would have cost us at least $500. The book provides solutions of the BCA practice tests, and also has 7 new practice tests which resemble the official tests. So plenty of practice with real test type math problems.
