Exceptionally Clear Presentation of Meditation

1. The distinction between concentration and mindfulness as forms of practice has never in my reading experience been so clearly stated. (My meditation library is extensive and my practice is 7 years old.) 2. The stages of insight work -- also, the clearest presentation in my reading experience. Particularly helpful were the discussions on "visions" (p. 12) and pseudonirvana (p. 26). 3. Part IV: The Psychology of Meditation -- This is a gem. Ties in beautifully with _Emotional Intelligence_ (another Goleman treasure). The "altered states or altered traits" of consciousness discussion (pg. 172-5) is the best explanation of the "3rd foundation of mindfulness" I have seen. Summary: If you are interested in how your practice fits into the grand scheme of practices or looking for a menu to chose from, this is the book. If you want a clarification of the path at the center of all practices, no where else have I seen a better presentation.
This! ! is a seven star book as is _Emotional Intelligence_.

Scientific study of meditation

Good overall book of meditation. Goleman makes the distinction between the two major types of meditation: Concentration and Mindfulness. He also gives a pretty thorough description of the Visuddhimagga mind maps. He goes on to describe Hindu Bhaki, Jewish Kabblah, Christian Hesychasm, Sufism, TM, Ashtanga, Tantra and Kundalini Yoga, Tibetan Buddhism, Zen, Gurdjeiff and Krishnamurti

A Great Overview of Meditation Practices

In THE MEDITATIVE MIND: THE VARIETIES OF MEDITATIVE EXPERIENCE Daniel Goleman does an even more comprehensive job of covering his subject matter than William James did in his classic study of relgion,THE VARIETIES OF RELIGIOUS EXPERIENCE. Goleman covers a wider range of experiences and -- given that psychology has come a long way since James'day -- provides a more detailed analysis. This book ranks with Aldous Huxley's THE PERENNIAL PHILOSOPHY as a modern classic on spiritual paths. He makes a good case for meditation as an ancient "psychotechnology" (my words, not his) for the transformation of consciousness. He cuts through the superficial differences in meditative practices, and points out what all of them share at the core: the retraining of attention.

About the Author
Sheila Grossman, PhD, FNP-BC, APRN, is a Professor of Nursing and Coordinator of the Family Nurse Practitioner Track at Fairfield University School of Nursing. She received a BS in nursing from the University of Connecticut, her MS as a Respiratory Clinical Nurse Specialist from the University of Massachusetts/Amherst, a post-masters degree as a Family Nurse Practitioner from Fairfield University, and her PhD from the University of Connecticut. She has worked many years as a clinician on a variety of medical, surgical, and critical care units and presently practices as a Family Nurse Practitioner in a primary care clinic. She is the coauthor of The New Leadership Challenge: Creating A Preferred Future for Nursing, which is in its third edition (2009) and received an AJN book of the Year Award and has also received an AJN Book of the Year Award for Mentoring in Nursing: A Dynamic and Collaborative Process (2007), and coauthored Gerontological Nurse Certification Review in 2008 with Dr. Meredith Wallace Kazer. She is the author of multiple chapters and journal articles on leadership, mentoring, gerontology, adult health, and palliative care. Her research interests focus on symptom management in palliative care, leadership, pedagogy, cultural competence, and adult patient outcome studies. She is active in Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society, American Association of Critical Care Nurses, National Organization of Nurse Practitioner Faculty, American College of Nurse Practitioners, and is a certified End of Life Nursing Education Consortium Educator and a Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education Accreditation Site Visitor. She is the winner of the 2009 Josephine Dolan Award for Outstanding Contributions to Nursing Education sponsored by the CT Nurses Association.

book in very poor condition, the binding is torn apart and the bottom cover is almost falling off. The print potion of the book is in good condition but very highlighted.
Adding to my previous review:
My negative review on this book was based on the condition that the I received it in and has no bearing on the content. After readying most of it I have found this to be an excellent book, I plan on buying a copy in better condition and returning the one I rented. I plan to go back to school for my masters and doctorate and this book will be very helpful during that endeavor. If you are a nurse and plan to move to higher education or becoming specialized in any area, this book is an excellent resource and should be a part of your library.

Grund hierfür ist ihre primäre Zielsetzung, den steuer- und ausschüttbaren Gewinn nach dem Grundsatz des Gläubigerschutzes auf Basis des Vorsichtsprinzips zu ermitteln. Diese Ausrichtung konfligiert mit dem vorrangigen Zweck der anglo-amerikanischen Rechnungslegung, den Kapitalmarktteilnehmern nach dem Grundsatz des Aktionärsschutzes auf Basis einer entscheidungsrelevanten Bilanzierung faire Informationen über die Vermögens-, Finanz- und Ertragslage des Unternehmens bereitzustellen. Die Ansatzpunkte der Kritik lassen sich hierbei im wesentlichen auf folgende zwei Aussagen zusammenfassen: (1) Der Grundsatz der Maßgeblichkeit der handelsrechtlichen für die steuerrechtliche Gewinnermittlung, insbesondere in Form der umgekehrten Maßgeblichkeit, die steuerliche Vergünstigungen, z.B. wirtschaftspolitisch motivierte Sonderabschreibungen, von ihrer Vornahme in der Handelsbilanz abhängig macht, beeinträchtigt den Informationsgehalt der deutschen Jahresabschlüsse. (2) Gesetzliche Bewertungswahlrechte erlauben eine für den externen Bilanzleser nicht erkennbare Bildung und Auflösung stiller Rücklagen. Die hierdurch mögliche Verschleierung der tatsächlichen Vermögens-, Finanz- und Ertragslage schränkt die Kontrolle über die Leistungen des Managements ein und versetzt dieses in die Lage, einen nicht unerheblichen Einfluß auf die Ermittlung des ausschüttbaren Gewinns auszuüben.
