The approach to subtemperatures is a recent one, based on the Poisson integral representation of temperatures on a circular cylinder. Characterizations of subtemperatures in terms of heat balls and modified heat balls are proved, and thermal capacity is studied in detail. The generalized Dirichlet problem on arbitrary open sets is given a treatment that reflects its distinctive nature for an equation of parabolic type. Also included is some new material on caloric measure for arbitrary open sets. Each chapter concludes with bibliographical notes and open questions. The reader should have a good background in the calculus of functions of several variables, in the limiting processes and inequalities of analysis, in measure theory, and in general topology for Chapter 9.

This is worth reading

I came upon Isaacson's writing when I became curious about Einstein. His presentation of Einstein was portrayed as accessible for those of us who are not scientists but that nonetheless are interested in the people who developed it. It was such an engrossing book that the next step was reading something else by this author. No disappointment here, notwithstanding the wide differences in the subjects . In a word about Isaason, wow!
This was not always easy reading because one finds that time for thought is required for juxtaposing one's beliefs and democratic experience with Franklin's. It is not to sit in judgement on him but rather to compare and contrast his life and times with mine and to consider what he might make of those differences even as I do the same. That is the mark of a great read and author.
I will end this review with my hearty agreement with the last "fundamental ideal" that Franklin,according to Isaacson, held: "a faith in the wisdom of the common citizen that was manifest in an appreciation for democracy and an opposition to all forms of tyranny." (p. 493). It is my hope and trust that an informed citizenry can make good decisions for their own well being if they follow their common sense. It is no more difficult to do that today than it was then and no less important. That is to say it is very difficult and very important.

This is the third copy of this book I have purchased, having given away my other two, that how much I love it. Isaacson wrote an excellent biography of Franklin, one that I've reread a few times. I know the expression"like you were there" is overused but this book actually makes you feel you knew the real Franklin. I've been reading a lot about the younger Franklin recently, his time as an apprentice to his brother James, a printer, his self-education, his escape to Philadelphia, but this book presents the complete Franklin in a way thats reachable. Its not complicated reading, its an exciting story that makes you totally familiar with the man, warts and all.

This book is a "keeper"

Very readable! The only "criticism" I have of this book and author is the constant piling on of fascinating and revealing facts, stories, and explanations on every single page, such that the reader is left with no option but to devour every single word. I generally handle 500+ page books by skimming and skipping, but this one tied me down for weeks. And unlike most books, I didn't look forward to finishing it. This book is a "keeper".

From my many penciled-in notes, here are some of the things I learned about Benjamin Franklin and his world: Where do surnames come from? (p 5); Cotton Mather tells him, "Stoop, young man" (don't brag so much, and people will like you much better) (p 41); warns against being dogmatic in group meetings (like his Junto meetings) (p 57); the importance of doing good deeds, as well as having good thoughts (p 88); many wise maxims, such as: "He's a fool that cannot conceal his wisdom" (p 99); Scientist and Inventor: all his inventions were freely donated for public use (p 129+); General Braddock's arrogance leading to his defeat and death (p 166); life in London with his new substitute "family" (p 175+); becomes filled with depression, when genocide against innocent Indians becomes legalized in 1763, against all his efforts (p 212-4); balloon mania in France (p 420); required opium for relief from extremely painful kidney stones (p 462). To summarize his life, more than anyone else Franklin created the idea of a "United States" decades before it became a fact, through his zeal and support in uniting the colonies: he did this by helping to create the beginnings of a colony-wide political, social, and military infrastructure.

About the Author
Alistair Moffat was born and bred in the Scottish Borders. A former Director of the Edinburgh Festival Fringe and Director of Programmes at Scottish Television, he now runs the burgeoning Borders Book Festival as well as a production company based near Selkirk. He has written six previous books that are published by Birlinn.

Excellent overview of several thousand years of Scottish history

I have read books dedicated to the history of Scotland that were less informative than this one, which does not even profess to be a standard history. Instead it focuses on the genetic roots of the Scots. But you could leave out the DNA discussions and still have a first-rate overview of the land and its peoples' interactions with populations in England, Ireland and Scandinavia.

I think the jury must remain out on a few of the genetic associations and assertions made by the authors. Scotland is a place with a complex genetic history. It is not difficult to discern different markers in the DNA of the Scots that point to different eras of immigration, shifts in power, and decline of particular components of the population. I am not convinced that the authors have properly associated one distinct genetic profile with the ancient Picts, though of course they may be right. Similarly, their treatment of a marker found extensively in Northern Ireland and Lowland Scotland seems to combine different clans and families in a way not supported by traditional genealogy and records.

Even if the authors overreach in some of their analysis, this book is rich in food for thought. Several books have been written in recent years about the peopling of the British Isles, many of them using DNA analysis of modern populations as a tool. I consider this one the best I have encountered so far.

(I have followed the use of DNA analysis for both genealogical and anthropological analysis for about a decade. About 4-5 years ago I used the laboratory services of co-author Wilson -- no relation, as confirmed by DNA! -- to establish several marker values from a DNA sample I provided. I am not a molecular biologist, but I consider myself an educated layman.)

An excellent journey through time....

I bought the book because both my husband and myself have Scottish ancestry, and I was curious about what the authors had to say. If you are looking for a book that has an extensive list of genealogical data, this is not it, although it has some. It is a sweeping story of the history of a region of the earth, and how that history is reflected in the bloodlines of the people living there today. It is surprisingly interesting, easy to digest, and you can learn a lot, quite painlessly. I highly recommend this.

The origins of the Scots

This is a relatively recent history of Scots origins and so is most up-to-date and very complete, as far as is known. A reason is given for the 'disappearance' of the Picts. The history of Scotland in the first millennium AD is extremely complicated and it takes more than one reading to digest it all. The format, part history and part narrative, is a good balance. It is a very full and authoritative book and well worth reading, and useful as a reference.

Thorough and knowledgeable treatment of PICs

This is a very thorough treatment of PICs. There are so many great aspects to this book it is hard to know where to begin. The book starts at the beginning, talking about logic circuits and essential micro theory, such as address decoding and so on. The PIC architecture and instruction set is covered in detail and the many well crafted diagrams are used to convey the relevant information.
I particularly enjoyed the later chapters on interfacing, parallel, serial and A/D. A whole chapter on using timers is also very welcome. These chapters offered real practical advice and examples. In fact there are many examples throughout the book and all have been tried and tested. It goes without saying that programming the PIC (instruction set, bank addressing, assembly code, timing, modules and subroutines and so on...) is well covered and a whole chapter is devoted to interrupt handling.
This book is dense with a lot of great info packed beautifully into about 500 pages. There is an accompanying website which has extensive resources such as instruction sets that can be downloaded and printed out. There is also an comprehensive errata section and solutions to self assessment questions that appear at the end of nearly all the chapters. I really like this as most books are very quick to ask questions but rarely do they give the answers. Since most of us are not monks we don't want to spend the rest of our lives thinking of what an answer might be. Much better to understand the problem and be guided to the answer when we are in a hurry.
MPLAB, available free from Microcontroller's website (or indeed the authors) is used throughout so you don't need to worry about [the] software.
Make no mistake, this is not a hobbyists cookbook. This is a serious treatment of a serious subject. Professionals should note that in addition to a chapter devoted to assembly programming there is also a chapter on using a high level language (C in this case). Of course there are many, many code examples throughout the text.
I really like this book, at the price I think it is a real bargain. Especially when you compare this with the many hobby PIC books which only offer a cursory treatment of PICs and tend to concentrate on 8-bit versions. This book also covers the 14 and 16 bit cores.

Completed Reference

I am fairly new to the PIC world. While trying to pic (pun intended)out a suitable MCU book I came across this particular book. This is a great reference book for both advanced and begginers. I also purchased PROGRAMMING AND CUSTOMIZING PICmicro MICROCONTROLLERS by Myke predko. The combination of these book had me writting softwre and building complex circuitry in no time. I was able to build a small robot which uses the following:
Pulse width modulation, Seven Segment Display control, Playback/Recording, push buttons, servo contol, DC motor control.
These are both great books I reccomend them highly.

DO NOT BUY THIS BOOK FROM AMAZON

Amazon is trying to pass on the older edition of this book as the new edition. I tried two times and I keep getting the orange cover book, which is a 2002 edition not the 2007. Once you get this book you will have a hard time getting your money back.

Highly readable yet includes so many details!

The author teaches my kids and he is a true Renaissance man. This is not his only area of expertise--he has his Juris Doctorate, as well as a great knowledge of Philosophy and Ethics. My kids love him. But this is a book review so here are the facts: This is a huge volume written chronologically from the time of Sumer which ended in 2316BC to the Fall of Jerusalem in 70AD. Thankfully, it has a detailed index, however the index (not the text) is a bit difficult to read because of the fine print & the wide space between the subject and the page numbers. I use this book for two purposes: As a reference guide to look up details about various Bible characters & time periods since I teach a Bible Study Fellowship class. This is also the textbook for my 9th-grader whom I am currently home-schooling. I would have to say this is a bit much for a 9th grader to handle. Although readable, the details and facts are overwhelming to absorb. He cannot take this all in without some direction on what the important points are to remember and why some things are more important than others. This would be an excellent text to use alongside a study of the Old Testament if you really wanted to understand the historical context and what was going on in the countries and cultures in and around Israel/Palestine. Overall, this is an essential reference for any Bible teacher or historian focusing on any time period from Gilgamesh (or Genesis) to Vespasian. And for those to whom it matters, this is not necessarily written from a Pre-millenial perspective, which I actually found rather interesting.

Initially, it is a visually attractive product -- an over-sized text, large print, interesting pictures and graphics throughout -- plus a beautiful, striking cover! His control of the narrative is impressive. His style is easy, clear and accessible. He gives the reader all of the "history stuff" and adds spicy, little-known details about famous people and places along the way. The subtitle is instructive. Understanding the world that shaped the Bible makes the Bible itself more three dimensional, more real,more human. I came away from the book thankful for all of the good work done for me by the author. He tells me things I really like knowing but have none of the drive necessary to find out on my own. The book does exactly what it's supposed to do -- it's an academically literate introduction to a massive subject -- and it's interesting! Mr. Gore has done all of the heavy lifting and the reader gets all the benefits. In sum, I agree with the writer's self-assessment. He's right when he describes the text as delivering the kind of classical education he wishes he could have received earlier in life. Lastly, it can also serve as a great teaching resource.

Not as detailed as I expected

I have a love for history and am constantly seeking to learn more, especially where history and The Bible intersect. This book does cover a lot of Bible history but, as my dad would say, "It is a mile wide but only an inch deep."
