Broad Overview of Cruise Life

If you have never taken a cruise and are clueless on what to expect, this book may provide some useful information. The book provides a brief overview to the various cruise lines and offers some general guidance on cruise life. On the downside:

1. The cruise lines are constantly experimenting with alternative dining programs and other innovative programs. It is very easy for a book like this to quickly become out-of-date.
2. Your particular cruise experience will be driven more by the specific cruise line, ship and itinerary than the generic guidance offered in this book.
3. The book is very remedial. If you have never travelled and need an exhaustive 'do list' (when to get your passport, when to pack, what to pack, etc.), you may find this book helpful. I personally found the book over-emphasized travel generic information that I thought was more or less obvious and under-emphasized the cruise-specific experience.
4. There are much better options available in print (more timely and packed with more information). You might try "The Unofficial Guide to Cruises" or the annual Fodor or Berlitz guides. For cruise-line or cruise-ship specific information, I found the various on-line reviews to be much more useful.

A Great Find For All First Cruisers!

I am one of the 40% of people who have not experienced the joy of a cruise, however I heard the rave reviews of friends and family members regarding the cruises they have taken and have always been intrigued. I have to admit, now that I've read this guide, I'm a bit more than intrigued, I have wondered how I can make a cruise a reality for myself and my immediate family as well. From the opening of the first chapter, Mr. Chatfield engages the reader with captivating history about the cruise history industry. History isn't normally something anybody would run to hear, but the presentation of this information is as though he is speaking to you, his good friend.
The ins and outs of the cruise industry and how it affects you as a consumer continue to flow succinctly from chapter to chapter with down to earth advice such as how to choose the cruise that is right for you and your pocket, how the cruise staff works to keep you protected to even more in depth insight of avoiding falling prey to cruise scams. Brian Chatfield pulls out information that I have to admit I hadn't thought about such as securing passports, what types of items are safe to purchase while on your trip, and even how to choose the correct luggage for any flights you may have to take. He gives honest and refreshing information as to the pros and cons of this type of trip and even the cons seem as though they are manageable.
When I saw how many pages this book had, I thought surely such insignificant information could be given in brochure form or most assuredly less than twenty pages, but the immense wealth of information contained in these chapters is like an unearthed treasure trove not to be ignored. Brian Chatfield presents honest tactics to secure your trip with checklists of the steps that need to be taken care of before, after and during your trip. This book comes complete with information on cruise ship industries, both the small and larger ships and the benefits of booking cruises with either. There is contact information and a listing of what you can expect on these particular ships. There are carefully thought out plans to make a cruise happen for every reader presented in a candidly refreshing and easily readable manner.
I always thought "how to" books had a pointless quality, yet after experiencing firsthand mismanagement of situations that could have been alleviated with the proper advisement and planning, the extra help is welcome. Upon completion of this book, I felt prepared to plan and take a relaxing cruise. Out of 5 stars, I give this complete guide 5 stars.

After reading this book, I will consider a cruise

I still love to travel, but I have become disenchanted with plane travel, since the trip is no fun anymore. If you're like me, a cruise might be the option for you--or you may have tried a cruise, loved it and want to explore other cruise options. Your First Cruise lays out many of these options, such as the "megaliners" that most people see the most marketing for, to yacht, freighter and river cruises. I was impressed by how many cruising options--not just the numerous destinations from Aruba to Alaska, or Europe to the Middle East--which according to the book include "more than 60 different lines and 300 ships on the water at any given time" (p.75). There are also plenty of options for shipboard life, from structured to "freestyle" voyages, and you can travel with or without kids, or by theme. According Your First Cruise, you can also take a cruise for less than one thousand dollars--not including your costs to get to the port of departure--which means that a cruise may also be a "budget" holiday.

There are some disadvantages to cruising, since not all are inclusive, and you may need to have cash for "port tax" if it isn't covered in the cost of the cruise. Some off-ship excursions may require you to spend extra money to take part. Illness, often mentioned in the media, is also an issue, but probably just as hazardous as incautiously sampling foreign food, or getting lax about hand washing, while on any trip. Your First Cruise does address these issues and covers others, like packing for your cruise, and the book has a great bibliography that you can use to fill in some of the blanks that remain before you book your trip.

Your First Cruise reminded me that the voyage, not just the destination, should be fun, and a cruise might be one option for a refreshing holiday.

About the Author
William Lingwood, one of Britain's best-known names in food photography, didn't start that way. As an oil-worker in the Middle East, he discovered the books of Elizabeth David and Jane Grigson, and the photography by Robert Freson and Tessa Treagar. In 1990, he hung up his desert boots and picked up a camera : his work now appears his books and magazines.

Fiona Smith is a young New Zealander based in London and working in Europe. Her innate sense of taste, colour, and style has formed the basis of her career. As a food stylist, she works on books, and in advertising and television, while her reputation for innovative and stylish catering has made her a favourite with those "'in the know"'. Fiona manages a private chalet in the Swiss Alps during the winter, she is able to combine her love of good food with a passion for snowboarding.

"Dim sum?" Hardly.

From the title of this book one would expect to find real dim sum recipes inside. Instead, most of the recipes are Asian-inspired finger food, which is not at all the same thing. Dim sum is a Chinese food, not a general Asian-ish type of cuisine. To call these recipes "dim sum" is almost as inaccurate as calling French hor d'oevres "dim sum" simply because they are small, bite-sized treats.

I might come across as a bit pedantic here, but this is not simply a matter of semantics. If the author had used a more accurate title such as "Asian Finger Food" I would not have lowered my rating by 2 stars. The actual recipes are good and certainly creative, but they do not fit the title of the book.

Bottom line: if you are looking for true, traditional dim sum recipes, look elsewhere. There are better books on the topic. If you are thinking of getting this book, know ahead of time what you are getting and you will not be disappointed, because this is a good recipe book.

Fusion cuisine at its most delicious

Every recipe comes with an artfully arranged photo as background, showing what the recipe will (ideally) look like when you're done with it. The photos are gorgeous and wonderful to look at, and sometimes aid you in figuring out exactly what the author means when she gives an instruction on how to put something together. (Not that her instructions are confusing, but sometimes pictures can say things that are difficult to get across through words.)

The recipes are fairly simple and short, and simply arranged. Ingredients are nicely separated from directions, and directions are divided into short paragraphs. Each recipe comes with a brief paragraph commenting on some aspect of the recipe or the tradition behind it.

The book includes a very brief introduction to the idea of dim sum-this really isn't an introductory text, and would not be best as a first dim sum book unless the cook using it is experienced and confident in the kitchen in general. (Ellen Leong Blonder's Dim Sum: The Art of Chinese Tea Lunch makes a great starting text.)

Recipes range from "crisp vegetables with roasted salt and pepper dip" (read: tempura), to sweet and sour pickled vegetables, wilted bean sprout and peanut salad, salmon and Asian pesto packages, mussels with egg noodles and black bean sauce, shrimp and scallion fritters (which are "based on a Mexican original" with "a Chinese twist"), little Szechuan chicken steamed buns, steamed dumplings with kaffir lime and lemongrass, peking-style duck pancake wraps, and a decent spread of dips and sauces-as well as other dishes.

The recipes don't call for a lot of unusual ingredients. We can find many of them at our local generic grocery store (and it doesn't have a lot of odd stuff), and sometimes substitutions are suggested. For example, when making sticky rice in banana leaves with chicken skewers, it's suggested that you could use foil instead of banana leaves.[...]can be a good source of some harder-to-find ingredients such as lemongrass.

The recipes come out uniformly delicious and delightful in our experience. The chile beef wontons are, so far, our favorite of the various fried wonton recipes we've made. The tiny pork, tofu, and broccoli spring rolls are delicious. The mango wontons with lime sauce were to die for. And this book is one of the best sources, among the dim sum books we have, for sauces and dips. There are only four of them (technically there are a few additional ones to be found among the other recipes), but they're perfect: a sweet chile sauce that goes well with almost anything, plum sauce, soy and ginger sauce, and a sweet and sour sesame sauce that's even better than the sweet chile sauce (and beats every other "sweet and sour" sauce we've tried so far, hands down).

Fiona Smith's approach to dim sum may be slightly unorthodox, but if you enjoy dim sum in specific or small appetizer foods in general, it's well worth a look. The recipes are fresh and creative, fairly easy, and absolutely delicious!

Truly a beautiful collection of Dim Sum in a small book, only 64 pages. Don't let the small size bother you, though this is serious great food.

30 recipes of asian inspired snacks from potstickers to egg rolls to wraps to soup to custard tarts, this is just beautifully done photographed and step-by-step instructions.

Feast your tastebuds on such as: Steamed Dumplings with Kaffir Lime and Lemongrass; Fish Balls with Shredded Wonton Coating; Salmon and Asian Pesto Packages; Jicama and Lime Salad; Shrimp and Scallion Fritters; Peking-style Duck Pancake Wraps; Orange and Almond Fortune Cookies; Five-Spice Custard Tarts; Steamed Pear and Ginger Puddings.

There are five great dipping sauces recipes included.

Una maravillosa sorpresa

Una historia sin villanos ni intrigas pero que mantiene al lector cautivado con los diálogos rápidos y divertidos. La historia se centra en Marc y Amy solo en ellos, lo que me gustó mucho ya que pudimos entender a los personajes, sus sentimientos y emociones. Tuve una sonrisa casi todo el tiempo que la leí por los diálogos y situaciones divertidas y hasta alguna lagrima en los momentos en que Amy cuenta su historia. Realmente la escritora logra llevar al lector toda la emoción y pasión de la historia, es maravilloso como a través de las palabras no hace sentir la emoción de Amy al tocar el piano y las emociones de Marc por los recuerdos. Fue una escena inolvidable. ¿Por qué cuatro estrellas? Me pareció que el final fue muy rápido y que una historia tan bonita necesitaba un poco más. Pero si quiere una lectura muy agradable, divertida y llena de romance no deje de leerla. Una maravillosa sorpresa, así fue esta historia.

La inocente Amy creyó que al hacer un trato muy especial con su vecino Marc no iba a salir raspada, pero sólo olvidó una cosa... cuando el corazón entra en la ecuación, cualquier trato puede volverse "casi perfecto".
Lectura muy amena, rápida, entretenida y sobre todo romántica.
Todos los libros de la autora son dignos de una recomendación. Y si eres unas persona como yo, que gusta de las historias sin tantas vueltas en la trama, sin repeticiones innecesarias y sin tanta descripción de los entornos, entonces Minerva Hall es tu autora. :D

This book is interesting and informative, but like the author's other book "Practicals of Mantra and Tantra", several of the mantras are only given in Sanskrit, not in English. Also, there are references to using animal parts to accomplish certain magickal goals, which is in very poor taste. Anyone who is accomplished in "magick" and the workings of the mind knows using animal parts is completely unnecessary. Secrets of Yantra, Mantra and Tantra
