I read it as a science fiction novel where the main characters have strange names like “infra-comma”, “supra-sharp”
By Carlo Serafini
“A Theory of Evolving Tonality” by Joseph Yasser is a marvelous book because the author created a vast universe of theories, calculations, conjectures and predictions regarding a possible evolution of the most basic element of music: the tuning system even though his prophesies have resulted totally unfulfilled.
I read it as a science fiction novel where the main characters have strange names like “infra-comma”, “supra-sharp”, “falsonance” and “centitone” and the plot slowly evolves from antiquity on planet Earth to imaginary worlds on a faraway galaxy.

Still the best book on 19-tone equal musical temperament
By A Customer
19-tone equal temperament divides the octave into 19 equal tuning degrees, instead of the more usual 12. I am probably the world's leading authority on this temperament. Yasser's book is one of the half-dozen most important references on the subject. His basic thesis is that music has evolved from 5 to 7 to 12 tones in the octave, and is in the process of proceeding to 19 tones. There are problems with this idea, but there can be no doubt that to the extent that music makes use of microtones it will tend toward the 19-tone equal, for a variety of acoustic and physiological reasons. Rock singers constantly use 1/3 tones, for example, and this points toward the 19-tone equal. Yasser's work pullulates with interesting ideas regarding modality and the theory of temperament, and is an essential reference.
